Step by step self coaching model based on NLP. Welcome to this new series of articles on self-coaching that I will be sharing over the coming 8 weeks.

NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) is the study of language and of excellence. Richard Bandler and John Grinder set out to discover how to model (and then reproduce in anyone) excellence. While they did so, they discovered many surprising things. Including, how to make instant and lasting change in your life.

It was not about will power, it was about understanding where behaviour comes from.

New Results

Results come from behaviours. Okay, that sounds logical right? And very simple too.

Not easy. But simple.

Coaching to this Model

STEP ONE: Coaching is also simple. It starts with “Where are you now?” Specifically. – I will show you how in the coming weeks.

STEP TWO: Next: “Where do you want to be?” Specifically and in a measurable way. How will you know for certain you have reached success? What will you be doing or not doing that is different than what you are doing now? We are looking for concrete descriptions of success so that you will recognize it when you get there! – I will show you how in the coming weeks.

STEP THREE: Identify the gap in measurable terms. – I will show you how in the coming weeks.

STEP FOUR: “What new behaviours will you need to do to get that new result?” – I will show you how in the coming weeks.

Then get into some discussion (with yourself or a partner) as to why you are not already doing those behaviours. Sometimes it is just that the goal is new and the strategy has not yet been created. Sometimes, the behaviours are hard, scary, anxiety-inducing, a skill that is missing.

What would you have to believe about yourself or the world to be able to easily and effortlessly behave in this new way?

Conversely: What would you have to believe about yourself or the world to NOT be able to easily and effortlessly behave in this new way?

STEP FIVE: Change those beliefs – I will show you how in the coming weeks.

STEP SIX: Create and manifest that goal – I will show you how in the coming weeks.

STEP SEVEN: Weekly check-ins, accountability, measurement, and celebration. – I will show you how in the coming weeks.

STEP EIGHT: Repeat Step Seven until new results achieved. (Every so often re-employing Step Five when stinking-thinking pops up.)
